Sri Lanka are in good form recently. Though they lost the Compaq cup final, they showed great performance in other matches. Sri Lanka won test series against New Zealand as well as both ODI and test series against Pakistan which shows they are in superb touch. Matthew, Thusara are really emerging along with Kulasekara who is the no.1 ODI bowler. South Africa on other hand are back after a long break. They haven't played a single international match after T20 World cup. Anyway, they are superb ODI sides.

Players to watch: Sanath Jayasuriya and Angelo Matthews for Sri Lanka,
Dale Steyn and Graeme Smith for South Africa

Pitch: Its said to be evenly balanced for both bat and ball. Being a day and night, batting first is a advantage but much not dependent on the pitch.

Weather: Its expected to be clear with mostly sunny in the daytime.

NET RUN RATE

Net Run Rate has been playing vital role in deciding the team advancing to next stage in competitions like World cup, T20 World cup, Indian premier league and so on. They are used in T20 and 50-over ODI cricket in the manner similar to goal difference in football(soccer). In simple words its the difference of run rate of a team and the run rate of the opposing team. If a team gets all out before batting for prescribed overs (20 overs in T20 or 50 over in ODI), then the run rate is calculated by dividing the runs scored by whole prescribed overs.

How is net run rate in cricket calculated ? Calculation of Net run rate step by step:

1) First of all get the total runs scored by the team. Wickets are never counted.
2) Get the total overs batted by the team. If teams bat all overs then all 50 or 20 overs are taken. If they are all out then still all 50 or 20 over is taken. In case team batting second, only the overs it batted is taken.
3) Divide the total runs scored by the overs.
4) Net Run Rate for a team is the difference of its total run rate and another teams total run rate in the match. In case of loss, its negative, 0 when a draw and positive when won.
5) In a series, net run rate is the average of rates of the team. Its equal to sum of run rates in each match divided by total matches.

In recent T20 World cup it has been a vital factor. In IPL 2009, Deccan Chargers qualified for the semis though they had same points as Punjab due to better net run rate.

India vs Pakistan in ICC Champions Trophy 2009

After a long gap of more than 14 months, we will see two arch rivals India and Pakistan face to face in international cricket. The group A match of ICC Champions trophy scheduled on 26th September is certainly one of the most awaited matches this year for cricket fans. With no hope of bilateral series for at least 2 years, India vs Pakistan matches will now be rare and these type of tournaments are only the hope of seeing them together.

India and Pakistan last played in Asia cup in June 2008. After Mumbai attacks, Pakistan's visit to India was canceled. So, this match is of great importance for every cricket fan. India - Pakistan matches are different from other cricket matches. Either its Ashes or India vs Australia, no match can surpass the excitement of India vs Pakistan.

I hope that the Champions trophy match will be a very close encounter. Either India wins or Pakistan, the match should not be one sided. It should be really exciting and thrilling. The 2007 World Twenty20 final is one of the most exciting matches I have ever seen and I feel it had every taste which India-Pakistan match is expected to have.

Note the date and time below and be glued to the TV to view India vs Pakistan in Champions Trophy 2009:

India vs New Zealand in Champions trophy warm-up match 2009 - live

Before the start of Champions Trophy, India plays an unofficial ODI match against New Zealand as a practice match. Its the final practice for the Indian team for Champions trophy in which they are regarded as one of the favorites. India had defeated New Zealand heavily in the recent encounter in tri-series. Though India plays a single warm-up match, New Zealand played against the Warriors in which it suffered a heavy defeat.

India vs New Zealand - Champions Trophy Warm-up match 2009
Date: 20th September. Time: 12:30 PM GMT , 6:00 PM Indian time

The match is supposed to be a exciting match. Regular Indian players from the 15-men squad will play in the match. Though its unofficial, it is supposed to provide the full excitement which a ODI match provides. But I don't think the match will be shown live on TV.

I have checked the schedule of Star cricket which broadcasts in India and Supersport which broadcast in South Africa but none are showing the warm-ups. The best way to get live action is from Live commentary and scorecards from the Internet. Just go to cricinfo for live action.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka - Champions trophy warm-up match 2009 - Live

Before the start of Champions trophy 2009, some unofficial ODI matches are going to be played as warm-up matches. On 18th September, Pakistan and Sri Lanka battle at Benoi. The regular players are expected to play in this warm up match and it will be fully entertaining. As a final practise for the ICC Champions Trophy 2009, both the teams will try their best.

Pakistan is captained by Younis Khan. For them the bowling is the strength. Umar Gul is in great touch. In batting Umar Akmal is emerging. Shahid Afridi is showing his all-round performance. The Sri Lankan team for me are one of the favorites for the Champions trophy. They have batting of Sangakkara, Dilshan and Jayasuriya. Matthews is one of the best all-rounders I have seen in world cricket at present.

I don't think any TV channel will broadcast this warm-up match live. The best way to enjoy this match is by viewing live on the internet. Get the live scorecard and commentary on cricinfo.

Compaq Cup Final Live - India Vs Sri Lanka 2009

Sri Lanka and India will play in the final of Sri Lanka tri-series 2009. Both the team outplayed the third team New Zealand in their matches. In the last match, Sri Lanka defeated India by a huge margin of over 130. India are struggling with the bat with no batsman able to lead the innings. Bowling from spinners have been great. Sri Lanka has the power of seamers. Matthews, Malinga and Thusara have played beautifully. Jayasuriya, Samaraweera and Kandamby have been brilliant with the bat.

India started the series with a roar winning New Zealand easily and getting no.1 position in ODI rankings. But everything was washed with the loss against Sri Lanka. Neither batting nor the bowling was satisfactory. Indian team which was very disciplined against New Zealand was throwing a lot of extras. Bowling must be very tight to win the match.

India vs Sri Lanka 2009 - Live in Compaq cup tri series

Both India and Sri Lanka defeated New Zealand and have reached he finals. But a match between India and Sri Lanka will be held before the final on 12th September. Both the teams were superb in the bowling. The battle of the fast bowlers is vital for the match. Nehra is in superb touch for India while Malinga is the key bowler for Sri Lanka.

Cricket Score Updates powered by vCricket.com
We have seen problems with batting in both matches. Sri Lanka was rescued by Samaraweera and Matthews against New Zealand while India too lost 4 wickets early. Both team should look to protect their wickets. India looking for genuine openers can have some problems with the top order. But Sachin showed good batting against NZ. Jayasuriya in recent days in not in great touch but once he gets going, it will be highly entertaining to watch him.

For India to retain the top ODI position, they must win his match.

Lax performances in one day series could cost England dear

I will freely admit that, following England’s dramatic and euphoric Ashes test victory, I looked upon the proceeding One Day Internationals as a bit of an anti-climatic sideshow.

Curiously placed between the test series and the Champions Trophy, on the fringes of the English autumn, to say it was like a case of “After the Lord Mayor’s show” is an understatement.

Flash back to 2005 and the one day series was before the test matches, nicely wetting our appetites ahead of the main event. I can understand the scheduling this time round is maybe to do with the hastily re-arranged Champions Trophy at the end of the month. But to ensure interest is maintained, I can’t help thinking they should return to their pre-test slot in 2013.

I sensed that feeling from the crowd from game one and as each inevitable defeat followed I could imagine the players thinking to themselves: “we don’t care, we’ve won the Ashes.”

Added to the general malaise hanging over the series was England’s poor one-day record so it became increasingly evident that this was never going to be classic.

And so it has proved. Australia have held England at arms length, toying with them at times, offering them the slimmest chance of victory, before ruthlessly going in for the kill with a few balls to spare.

They were wounded after the test series defeat and although this one day win will not get the Ashes back, they know a convincing victory - which still could be a whitewash - will re-dress the balance, score a few psychosocial blows ahead of future contests and tell the England camp that one swallow does not a summer make.

Another thing that has bothered me in the series has been England’s approach, or more accurately their lack of one. It appears they are unsure how to play the one day game, with field placings, batting orders and powerplays failing to fit together into one cohesive plan. Instead it comes across as ill-thought out and reactionary. Strauss apart, the batsmen have failed to build on starts while the lack of depth in the bowling attack has let them down at key moments. A back to basics approach is needed.

When we look back over this summer our overriding memory will, of course, be that of Strauss lifting that famous little urn once more. But that shouldn’t be allowed to gloss over what has been a desperately poor one day series.

England said they had learnt the mistakes of ’05 and wanted to prove their Ashes win of 2009 was no flash in the pan. But if these past few weeks are to go by, those old mistakes have already been made and the International cricket betting odds show this.
